They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and that certainly seems to be the case with the birth of the Leapfrog company.
The spark of an idea, which would lead to the formation of the Leapfrog company came up when an attorney named Michael Wood discovered his child was having difficulty learning to read.
After a frustrating search for any toys that would help his child learn phonics, Wood decided that the only way his son would have such a toy was if Wood made one himself.
After a few years of research and experimental construction, Wood finally came up with a phonics toy that he completed and sold in 1994.
Joined by Robert Lally and with contributions from family, friends, and Wood’s past clients, the Leapfrog company was born.

The Story Behind The Leapfrog Company And Their Learning Toys For Kids
Leapfrog Company – What’s In A Name?
Because Wood and Lally wanted their company to be educational, but in a fun way, they chose a name for their company that instantly brings to mind a simple, but fun game of childhood.
Leapfrog, for those who have never played leapfrog is a simple game where one child squats down, then another child leaps over them and then squats down as well, and the next child leaps over both and squats, and so on and so forth.
There are no winners or losers in the game and in the end, kids normally end up rolling on the ground laughing.
By naming their company Leapfrog, Wood and Lally were able to convey the sense of fun that can be found in all of this company’s educational products.
Leapfrog toys are designed for infants, toddlers, and elementary school children and will help them to improve their fine and gross motor skills while helping to teach colors, shapes, counting, reading, writing and math skills.
Many of the products focus on reading skills and a large share of this line of toys are electronic.
While Leapfrog company toys may not be the most popular toys for kids, they are exceptionally helpful in helping children to build basic reading and math skills, which is one reason why parents like these toys.
